SUMMARY:Cannes Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL\nThe Festival de Cannes is now the world’s most prestigious film gathering\, as well as its most widely publicized cultural event. Today a major forum for film-producing countries\, its history\, selections and prizes are usually thought to date back to 1946 – the year of the first festival proper. However\, the first seeds of the event were actually sown eight years earlier. \nWith the 76th season about to get underway\, the international Festival de Cannes is one of the world's most widely publicized events and certainly the most important film festival in terms of worldwide impact. Through the works\, artists and themes it platforms on the world stage over the course of its 15-day line-up\, the event is forever engaged in a process of self-renewal. \nWe put ten questions to Thierry Frémaux\, General Delegate since 2007\, on what the Festival de Cannes means today. \nIn order to achieve this level of longevity\, the Festival de Cannes has remained faithful to its founding purpose: to draw attention to and raise the profile of films\, with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema\, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level. And to this day\, this profession of faith constitutes the first article of the Festival regulations. It is a Cannes tradition to raise a glass to household names and usher emerging directors into the international film scene’s spotlight. That’s what makes Cannes\, Cannes. We always painstakingly curate our offering to ensure we showcase hidden gems alongside more mainstream films. \nThe Official Selection serves to highlight the diversity of cinematic creation through its different sections\, each of which has its own distinct identity. The films are screened in world preview showings\, meaning it’s often the first time they come under the watchful gaze of a demanding audience made up of professionals and film lovers. \nSome sections culminate in awards\, such as the Competition where incredibly high-level “mainstream art film” works are presented\, Un Certain Regard\, which recently shifted its focus to return to more experimental up-and-coming arthouse directors\, and CINEF film school graduate offerings. \nBut the Official Selection also centres on Out of Competition\, Special Screenings\, Midnight Screenings\, and Cannes Première films\, as well as heritage works screened as part of Cannes Classics and the Cinéma de la Plage. The important thing is that this Selection is both balanced and representative of cinematography at the time in terms of creativity and geography. \n  \nHistory of the Festival\nIn July 1938\, the Venice Mostra\, the first international competition dedicated to the film world\, saw the major pre-war film-producing countries gather together for the sixth time. France was represented with a series of films\, and on the jury by the diplomat Philippe Erlanger.\nOn the day of the Awards ceremony\, the jury was unanimous. An American film had captured their hearts\, but under pressure from Hitler the Nazi propaganda film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl and the Italian film Luciano Serra\, Pilot by Goffredo Alessandrini reaped the ultimate accolade\, named the Mussolini Cup. The decision provoked outrage among the members representing democratic countries and France\, the United States and Great Britain left the Mostra\, vowing not to return.\nDuring his train journey back to France\, Philippe Erlanger\, thought of setting up an event to replace the Mostra and offer the world a festival that was free of pressure and constraints. On his return\, he contacted the authorities. There was no time to waste – a rival French festival was required before the next Venice competition came around. \nFrom September 1938 to May 1939\, the initiative became a genuine State affair. Georges Bonnet\, the Foreign Minister\, was afraid of poisoning Franco-Italian relations\, but the Education Minister Jean Zay\, and Minister of the Interior Albert Sarraut\, supported the idea of a film festival for Europe in which art would no longer be influenced by political manoeuvring. In June 1939\, the creation of a film festival in France was announced in the media\, supported by various film-producing countries\, led by the United States\, and scheduled to open on 1st September – the same day as the Mostra\, which left only a few months to prepare the entire event. \n  \nDEADLINES & FEES\nOpening Submission Date\nTBA \nEvent Date\nMay 14 - 25\, 2024 \n  \n\n\n\n\nSubmissions Deadline\n\n\nFeature Films (DVD/Blu-ray)\nTBA: €140\n\n\nShort Films\nTBA: €30\n\n\n\n  \nVisit the Cannes Film Festival website for more information.

SUMMARY:Slamdance Film Festival - Open For Submissions
DESCRIPTION:Park City\, Utah\nUnited States\n  \nABOUT THE SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL\nThe Slamdance Film Festival is a showcase for raw and innovative filmmaking that lives and bleeds by its mantra: By Filmmakers\, For Filmmakers. Slamdance has created a track record for showcasing breakthrough artists that is beyond dispute. Filmmakers who first presented their work at the festival are now amongst the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Alumni who have shown their early short films and debut features at Slamdance include Rian Johnson (Knives Out)\, Ari Aster (Midsommar)\, Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard)\, The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame)\, Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)\, Lena Dunham (Girls)\, Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians)\, Lynn Shelton (Little Fires Everywhere) and Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk). \nThe Slamdance Film Festival accepts films in every genre\, on any topic\, from every country around the world. We spotlight low-budget Narrative and Documentary Features by first-time directors\, Breakout Features from non-first time directors\, short films across genres\, and episodes. We do not disqualify any films based on premiere status or date of completion. \nThe festival program is selected entirely from our blind submissions pool and no films are given special treatment based on who made them or who they know. Over 200 Slamdance alumni filmmakers are responsible for the programming and organization of the festival. Comprised of a variety of backgrounds\, interests\, and talents\, but with no individual filmmaker’s vote valued more than any other\, Slamdance committees have been able to stay close to its original DIY spirit and continue to champion the bleeding-edge of contemporary filmmaking. \n"Of all the Sundance myths that developed over the last 35 years\, the biggest fallacy is that of being magically discovered and launching one’s career on a snow-covered January evening in Park City. SUMMARY:Edinburgh International Film Festival - Late Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Edinburgh\, Scotland\nUnited Kingdom\n  \nABOUT THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL\nThe original festival. We’re the one that started it all\, the igniting spark which established Edinburgh as the world’s Festival City.\nOur Origin Story\nFounded in 1947\, the International Festival was the inspired idea of Rudolf Bing\, a cultural pioneer and Jewish refugee of the Nazi regime. \nHe joined with civic and artistic leaders to create an event that would transcend political boundaries through a global celebration of performing arts in Scotland’s beloved capital city. Over the following 76 years the International Festival has flourished\, deepening our commitment to artistic excellence and cultural curiosity. Meanwhile\, sister festivals have grown up around us\, each of them contributing to the atmosphere of unparalleled excitement that transforms the city every summer. \nOur Festival\nWe welcome the world to Edinburgh to experience our hand-picked programme of the finest performers in dance\, opera\, music and theatre. Through their artistry we create space for reflection and reconciliation\, debate and celebration\, bringing people of different cultures and viewpoints together. \nOur Impact\nShining far beyond what you see on stage\, we aim to be a beacon for the enormous creativity\, curiosity and potential held within individuals\, communities and our nation. We offer year-round pathways for people of all ages and backgrounds to discover and participate in live performance\, and to help shape the future of our Festival. By nurturing the next generation of artists – from inspiring primary schoolchildren to mentoring rising stars – we want this legacy to be felt for years to come. \nOur Vision\nOur vision is simple: to provide the deepest experience of the highest quality art for the broadest possible audience. \nAudience Manifesto\n\nLive performance is most thrilling when audiences and artists are in communion with one another. What we each bring into the room matters.\nWe invite you to listen\, gather\, seek\, and feel with us. Sometimes we listen so deeply we hear every breath in the room; at other times we gather with a joyful roar! We’ll make sure you know what to expect.\nWe want you to feel truly welcome at our events. We ask and listen to what you need\, aiming to remove barriers through our Access Pass\, range of prices\, concessions and friendly staff.\nThere is always something new to discover – we hope our audio introductions\, post-show talks and ‘inside out’ concerts will reward your curiosity\, whether you’re here for the first time or you’ve been with us through the decades.\nThere is no singular view on why a symphony matters\, what makes opera relatable\, or how dance makes us feel. If you seek context and depth\, we will connect you with the human stories behind these works of art.\nWe present you a window to the world. Encounter familiar stories in other languages or from radically different perspectives. Bring an open heart and mind\, and we’ll provide specific guidance for those who want to feel more prepared.\n\n  \nDEADLINES & FEES\nOpening Submission Date\nJanuary 23\, 2024 \nNotification Date\nJune 30\, 2024 \nEvent Date\nAugust 15-21\, 2024 \n  \n\n\n\n\nEarly Bird\nRegular\nLate\n\n\nFeature Films\nMarch 8\, 2024: $60\nMarch 29\, 2024: $70\nApril 19\, 2024: $85\n\n\nShort Films\nMarch 8\, 2024: $25\nMarch 29\, 2024: $35\nApril 19\, 2024: $40\n\n\n\nVisit the Edinburgh International Film Festival website for more information. \n  \n\n\nVIEW THE EVENT CALENDAR
