The GFX ETERNA: The First True Digital Cinema Camera from Fujifilm
The well established and reputable manufacturer Fujifilm have been around for decades, producing a broad spectrum of imaging products including cameras, film stock, and even medical equipment. In terms of digital cameras, Fujifilm have released two main camera systems with a host of digital cameras: the GFX system and X System. One of the fundamental differences between the X and GFX systems is sensor size, and therefore, image quality. While both systems have general capabilities in photo and video recording, the GFX system lends itself to being more focused to professionals with higher image fidelity and capture capabilities. Recently, Fujifilm have announced the development and imminent release of its first ever cinema camera called the GFX ETERNA.
Although there are still many questions to be answered about this camera, Fujifilm have cited the new ETERNA "is set to revolutionize film production". The camera itself is planned for a release sometime in 2025, with an exact date yet to be announced. All we really know is that the GFX ETERNA will feature a large format sensor; the "GFX 102MP CMOS II HS", which is about 1.7 times larger than a 35mm sensor, and includes the "X-Processor 5", both of which technologies are currently in use by Fujifilm with their mirrorless digital camera the GFX100 II.
In addition to the new GFX ETERNA cinema camera, Fujifilm have plans to release a new power lens that will be optimized for the ETERNA, with a focal length equivalent to 32-90mm. While we await more news about the release of the GFX ETERNA, fans of Fujifilm products can be excited that the company is finally releasing a cinema first digital camera to their camera lineup.
We are not sure where pricing will come in at with the new GFX ETERNA, but knowing the GFX100 II retails for around $7499 USD, we can assume it will be higher than that.
