RODE Wireless Pro – A Compact Dual Microphone System
RODE has been a brand well known for producing high quality microphones, and have recently taken another significant step forward in broadening their microphone lineup with the new RODE Wireless PRO Compact Dual Wireless Microphone System, the successor to their popular Wireless ME wireless audio bundle. RODE's Wireless PRO microphone system is an ideal wireless microphone setup for content creators looking for a wireless audio system that is easy to use, records high quality audio, and isn't too hard on the bank account.
Overview
I find this Wireless PRO dual microphone package from RODE to be an intriguing system, because the two included transmitters have built in microphones, as well as separate lavalier microphones that can be attached when the microphone needs to be hidden. This feature is one that I have yet to test myself, but I like the idea of being able to very quickly record audio by just clipping a microphone transmitter to a subject without having to worry about hiding a lavalier microphone and cable.
However, the Wireless PRO System transmitters and receiver are powered with internal lithium-ion polymer batteries that can be charged in the included Charging Case Pro. RODE markets these as being able to record up to seven hours continuously on a single charge, with a full recharge happening in just 2.5 hours. Although the idea of internal batteries sounds nice, so users don't have to carry around a bunch of extra batteries, I personally like having the option to quickly change out batteries in events where one of the transmitters or receivers didn't charge properly.
Additionally, this new wireless package from RODE utilizes Series IV 2.4GHz digital transmission and 128-bit encryption with near-zero latency, within a range of up to 260m. Analog (3.5mm) and digital (USB-C) outputs are both offered for increased compatibility, and a headphone output, with on-board level control for monitoring. Interestingly, the ability to connect a headset or narrator microphone such as a lavalier to capture a third audio track is also available.
Perhaps the most powerful feature of the new Wireless Pro is the 32-bit on-board recording. 32-bit audio recording really is a game-changer in may ways, as it offers the ability to recover any recording in post-production that was too loud or too quiet.
Timecode Support
Many content creators and video professionals have felt the pain of having to manually sync audio in post-production at one point or another, even with auto syncing software getting increasingly more efficient. With RODE's Wireless Pro system, the receiver generates a timecode that can be received by other sync devices, such as cameras and other audio recording interfaces. If your camera accepts timecode, the Wireless PRO will record this data directly into your video files, but if not, you can still record the audio timecode signal into your device and have the timecode recognized later by your editing software, making syncing a very simple and quick process.
